Story
The Amnesty Chermside volunteer group is again taking part in the Bridge to Brisbane 2021 to raise funds for the amazing work challenging injustice by Amnesty International Australia which is 100% self-funded, mostly through donations. All donations made here are secure and are remitted directly to Amnesty International Australia.
From now until November 7 race day, for every donation no matter how small we'll write a solidarity letter to one of the people in the 2021 'Write for Rights' cases (https://www.amnesty.org.au/write-for-rights-activist-resources-2021/). You can even choose the case we write for - just comment when you donate or on this post.
Amnesty's wins for human rights from the past year include:
- Saudi Arabian activist Loujain al-Hathloul was released from prison after nearly three years locked up in horrific conditions. She campaigned for women’s rights, including the right to drive.
- When the military overthrew the civilian government in Myanmar, Amnesty called on the Australian government to finally cut ties with the Myanmar military – and they listened! One month later, defence cooperation was suspended.
- Moz and more than 100 other refugees and people seeking asylum have been released from detention, finding safety and freedom.
- Our latest death penalty report revealed that last year had the lowest number of executions around the world in a decade.
